Where the borders come from, and what the data cannot do.
Overture Maps Divisions is the primary source for names, hierarchy and boundary geometry. OpenStreetMap contributes upstream to that data, and geoBoundaries (gbOpen) is used as a documented compatible fallback where an administrative level is otherwise unavailable.
Country and region coverage is broadly complete. County, locality and neighborhood coverage varies enormously by country. We do not promise worldwide neighborhood coverage and we never will.
A stable source identifier, a valid Polygon or MultiPolygon, a human-readable name, a resolvable parent hierarchy, a recorded source and release, and no administrative suspension. Anything missing one of these is visible on the map but cannot be claimed.
Administrative boundaries are redrawn, renamed and merged. Updates are imported incrementally, paid claims are never deleted by an update, and any materially changed boundary is flagged for human review before it moves.
Where sources disagree, we keep every hierarchy the source publishes and display the source's default view. That display is a data choice, not a political position, and administrators can disable claiming on contested territories.
Boundary problems belong upstream in the open data, and we will help route them. Use the contact form with the “Boundary correction” category and include the territory identifier.
